On the occasion of W. E. B. Du Bois’s birthday, this panel celebrates the centennial of the remarkable and short-lived The Brownies’ Book (1920-21), the periodical for Black children edited by W. E. B. Du Bois, Jessie Redmon Fauset, and Augustus Granville Dill. Drawing from a range of disciplinary backgrounds, the panelists reflect on the magazine’s historical significance and enduring relevance, using The Brownies’ Book to consider topics such as Black youth literacy, the centrality of childhood in Du Bois’s conception of the souls of Black Americans, and play and movement in the magazine’s images. This panel is a preview of a special issue on The Brownies’ Book appearing later this year in Journal of the History of Childhood and Youth.
